    Late Season Wake Up Call

Just when we thought it was over, Hurricane Ida gives us a nice reminder that the late season, while statistically low in probability, can still deliver trouble.  It’s like our friend Dr. Snow always says, it not how many hurricanes there are in a given season, it’s how many come to your town.  It appears that Ida is going to hit the Nicaraguan/Honduran coast and then move up into the Gulf, Monday night or Tuesday, and then we will have to wait and see.  For South Florida, it seems unlikely that we will see much more than rain bands perhaps in the middle of next week.  Our friends on the rest of the Gulf Coast need to keep an eye out.

Did you know that Dr. John is from New Orleans and was terribly impacted by Katrina or was it a coincidence that you picked that song?

      Dear Nancy N.,
For those of us lucky enough to live in Miami, we have one of the best bookstores in the world here, Books and Books. It is located in Coral Gables and I believe has some copies of Last Train. Like many people I buy some books on Amazon for convenience, but whenever possible I like to buy local and this bookstore is a real community treasure. They have a lot going on there, reading, music etc. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Neighbor, of course I know Dr. John the Nighttripper is from New Orleans, he has done a lot of charity work for Hurricane Katrina victims. I noticed also that he is going to be at the Arsht Center in Miami sometime soon.
      Nightshifter,
Greetings back, good to hear from the ICU, DH in particular is doing a superb job utilizing the EICU technology, keep up the good work, I hope the redesign will deal with the comment problem.

I picked up a copy at the infamous Barnes & Noble after reading big brothers recommendation. Read it during a business week in St Augustine. Fit in nicely with the decor. Good book on hurricanes, history and engineering.
Glad to hear all is and remains quiet down there.
Enjoyin’ the fall colors up here (finally).

I am pleased to know you are looking to upgrade this blog and hopefully we can encourage you to continue blogging after the hurricane season is over. Your writing is not only quite interesting but your anecdotes are also fun to follow.I am sure there are other ’storms’ that you ‘weather’ in the healthcare world, aside from tracking the impact of hurricanes. Keep those stories coming!

first of all, I have been to a lot of orientations in my hospital career and this is the first where the senior exec ever welcomed us in such a personal manner, it really is a sign of a “great place to work”. Second I am glad my IT collegue mentioned this blog, it does give you insight into the “psyche” of the organization as you said.
